Pope Benedict XVI appointed Rev. Father Kay Martin Schmalhausen Panizo, S.C.V. as new Prelate of Ayaviri, on Februry 18th, 2006. He was consecrated Bishop in the Cathedral of Lima on Sunday, April 23, 2006. The Principal Consecrator was Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, Archbishop of Lima and Primate of Peru, and the Principal Co-Consecrators were Most Reverend Rino Passigato, Apostolic Nuncio to Peru, and Bishop Jose Antonio Eguren, S.C.V., Auxiliary Bishop of Lima. More than 35 Archbishops and Bishops participated in the consecration ceremony. Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, Archbishop of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) abd Primate of America.

Prelature of Ayaviri
On April 30, 2006, in a solemn ceremony in the Cathedral of Ayaviri, with the asistance of Archbishop Rino Passigato, Archbishop Juan Antonio Ugarte, Archbishop of Cuzco, and four other Bishops, Bishop Kay Martin Schmalhausen, S.C.V. entered the Cathedral and received the obedience of the clergy of the Prelature. It was a very important celebration partipated by more than 1,000 persons who participated with intense devotion and joy.
