The Coat of Arms has a long history as an identifying mark or heraldic form of identification for individuals, families, organizations or institutions. In the Church the  heraldic practice of Bishop's having a Coat of Arms has become customary. Usually the residential, that is the Bishop called the "Ordinary" of a jurisdiction has his coat of arms as symbol of the Archidiocese, Diocese, Prelature or Vicariate.

The coat of arms is completed with some external ornaments. First there is a gold processional cross, placed in back of the shield and extending above and below the shield. Then there is  a pontifical hat, called a "gallero".  It has six tassels, in three rows, on both side of the shield, all in green and gold.

Such coat of arms is the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop, according to the instructions of The Holy See of March 31, 1969.

When studying a coat of arms it is convenient to remember that the terms dexter and sinister are reversed as the device is viewed from the front.

On the dexter the symbol is that of the spiritual family of the Bishop, the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae. The symbol has as its base the "M" of the Holy Virgin Mary, from which a flame simbolizing the faith rises twords the high, making a figure of the torch of faith. A hand appears holding this torch of faitn in remebrance of the Liturgical promise to make the light received in Batism and Comfirmation shine from the high.

On the dexter one can see the Cross of the New Evangelization that express the Bishop's commitement with the Announce of Lord Jesus in the New Evangelization, new in its methods, new in its expressions and with special ardor.

On the lower field one can appreciate an image from the Peruvian Andean highlands, in allusion to Prelature of Ayaviri. The landscape of the image shows a star, symbol of Our Lady of Alta Gracia, Patroness of the Prelature.
The Episcopal heraldic achievement, or the Bishop's coat of arms, is composed of several elements.  The shield, which is the central and most important feature of any heraldic device, has its distintive symbols, as well as a motto scroll beneath it.
