Ayaviri, June 24, 2006 - As part of his mission as Pastor of the Prelature of Ayaviri, Bishop Kay Schmalhausen, SCV visited parishes and communities in the Province of Carabaya, beginning with the provincial capital Macusani.
Among the many activities he undertook, he had a cordial meeting with the priests who work in the zone in order to dialogue and inform himself about their pastoral needs, and about the challenges confronting evangelization corresponding to the pastoral zone of Carabaya.
Good news was given that contacts are being made with some dioceses in other countries in order to invite priests and religious to collaborate with the Prelature's urgent pastoral necessities. The Prelature contains 35 parishes at the moment and only 19 priests and four communities of female religious for a population of approximately 250,000. The Prelature of Ayaviri has around 35 seminarians, those who are still preparing themselves to be future priests of the Prelature.
The Pastoral visit to Carabaya on Bishop Kay's part is part of a series of meetings that the Prelate is carrying out in order to get to know the communities and faithful he has been entrusted with more closely. The Bishop, of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae religious family, has recently been visiting the parishes and communities of the province of Melgar.
