Ayaviri, October 29 - On the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the political creation of the Province of Melgar, Bishop Kay Martín Schmalhausen presided at the Te Deum mass in the Cathedral of Ayaviri in which the Catholic people of this province of Puno gave thanks to God for blessings received throughout the past year.

Present also at the Mass were the Congressman for Puno, Tomy Cenzano, the Provincial Mayor, Mr. Ricardo Chavez, and other civil and military authorities of the region.

During his homily Bishop Kay Martín emphasized that gratitude must accompany one more anniversary of the Province of Melgar: "We give thanks to God for all the good He has given us. Even in the midst of our simple lives and in our poverty we cannot ignore that God is good to us, that he has blessed us in many ways, and very especially with our people who are full of goodness, simplicity and joy."

He also took advantage of the occasion to exhort everyone to pray for what they need. "Lets us pray especially for peace among ourselves," he said. "How many conflicts are still with us! They are especially painful when they are manifested in violence within the family! Let us ask God for peace and unity... but let us work to achieve it by contributing our own efforts. Lets us work together to achieve the just development that all our brothers have a right to, those who live in the city and especially those who live in the countryside.

Finally, in the context of the electoral campaign Bishop Kay Martín expressed his wish that it be a time to exhibit ideas and projects that aim at the common good of the population, while being at the same time a time of calm dialogue and mutual respect between everyone.
