Ayaviri, March 19, 2007 - The recent arrival of three new religious communities in the Prelature of Ayaviri in the southern Peru - the Lumen Dei Union, the Servants of the Plan of God, and the Little Sisters of the Annunciation - has signaled good news for the inhabitants.
The Prelature of Ayaviri covers 32, 000 square kilometers and consists of a population of 250,000. In geographic terrain difficult to access and lacking appropriate routes of communication many villages of the provinces north of Puno which make up the Prelature do not receive the desired pastoral attention.
That is why the Prelature of Ayaviri has invited different religious communities to collaborate with the mission of the Catholic Church to work in favor of the materially and spiritually most needy.
The Lumen Dei Union was born a few decades ago in Peru with the aim of aiding the Quechua peoples. In only a few years its evangelizing and solidarity action has expanded to various countries around the world. At the moment one priest, two religious brothers, two religious sisters and some laypeople work in the different villages of the province of Carabaya: Macusani, Ayapata, Ituata, among others who benefit from their apostolate.
The Little Sisters of the Annunciation were founded in Medellín, Colombia by Mother Mary Berenice in 1943. Their charism is directed fundamentally at giving attention to the neediest children and youth in fields such as catechesis, education and health. They also carry out apostolate in the district of Llalli in the province of Melgar and have received a very warm welcome by the local population.
The Servants of the Plan of God were founded in Peru in 1998. In few years they have experienced a large vocational growth and have even already founded communities in Asia and Africa. Their pastoral work is dedicated fundamentally to work with the most poor, the sick, the elderly and education. They currently carry out their apostolate in the city of Ayaviri.
