OUR BISHOP
  
Most Reverend Kay Martin Schmalhausen Panizo, SCV, was born in Lima, Peru, on July 27, 1964. His father is German, and his mother Peruvian. He has a sister.

After he was born his family travelled to Germany, were they stayed from 1965 to 1975. When they returned to Peru he studied in Alexander von Humboldt High School, in Miraflores, in the city  of Lima.

On the last year of school he began to assist to a marian youth group. He sensed that God was calling him to follow Him in the priesthood. After a process of spiritual and vocational discernement he decidede to ask to be accepted as aspirant in the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae. On februry 1983 he entered in a community of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae to beging his formation.

Finnishing the inner stage of formation in his religious community, he studied Philosophy and Theology in the Facultad de Teología Pontificia y Civil de Lima,  and took a year of spirituality and pastoral  experience in the Archidiocesan Seminary of Medellín, Colombia. On december 14 of 1989 he made his perpetual profession as member of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae.

That same year, on december 16, he was ordained priest in Lima, in the Church of the Parrish of Saint  Anthony of Padua, in a concelebrated Mass presided by Cardenal Alfonso López Trujillo, then Archbishop of Medellin (Colombia), and participated by several  Archbishops and Bishops.


RETURN

He was incardinated in the Diocesis of Callao until Februry 2001, when Pope John Paul II gave the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae the authorization to incardinate its own priests.

After his ordination as priest, father Kay Schmalhausen, SCV worked as Chaplain of the Christian Life Movement, in Callao, as well as Director of the Office of Communications in the Diocese of Callao. He was also advisor of the Diocesan Comision for the Family in that Diocese. For several years he was Regional Asistent of Spirituality for the Peruvian Region of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae.

On 2003 the authorities of the Society of Apostolic Life asked him to move to the Archidiocese of Arequipa, were he has been since then Chaplain of the Catholic University of San Pablo, as well as Profesor of Ethics and Director of the Institute for Marriage and Family. He has been the espiritual director of Family of Nazareth, one of the associations that form part of the Christian Life Movement.

On februry 2006 he was appointed Bishop of Ayaviri by Pope Benedict the XVI. On April 23 he was consecrated Bishop in the Primate Cathedral of Peru, in a Solemm Mass, participated by more than two thousand faithful, and presided by Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani. On April 30, 2006 Bishop Kay Martin Schmalhausen, SCV took charge of the see of Ayaviri.
