TERRITORY OF THE PRELATURE OF AYAVIRI
The Prelature of Ayaviri covers an area of 12,392 square miles on the south of Peru. It is formed by three provinces: Melgar, which capital - the city of Ayaviri - gives the Prelature its name; Carabaya, which capital is Macusani; and Sandia, with capital on the city of Sandia, and on which we find one of the highest towns in the world: Poto, at 14,490 ft.
The territory has a great geographic variety, with altitudes from 1,970 ft, on the Tambopata and Yanahuay rivers' valleys, to 19,200 ft, on its highest point, the Mount Ananea. Such differences also give the region a very big
climatic variety. On the Andes Mountains, above 13,200 ft, the climate is freezing and the region almost uninhabited. Around 12,600 ft the climate is cold, and we can already find some cities, towns and villages, including the see of the Prelature - Ayaviri - which is located at 12,800 ft. On the Andes low valleys the climate is tempered and the region suitable to cereal and vegetable agriculture. The landscape of the mountains, with natural viewpoints, thermal and medicinal waters and wind erosional formations, presents a singular beauty.
We can also find forest regions in the Prelature. In fact, part of the provinces of Carabaya and Sandia are on the Tambopata Candamo Reserved Area, created for the protection of the fauna and flora of the tropical sub humid forests. This area constitutes one of the richest ecosystems in the world; it possesses a great diversity of wild life that captures many scientists and tourists from all parts of the world.
